Award Season: 72nd Emmys

21.09.2020

The 2020 Emmys is where my award season starts. It's the first night I stay up super late to watch people win awards.

The downside to being awards obsessed when you live in Europe is that you have to stay up late until 2am to watch them live and find some shady website that lets you watch ABC for free. It gets better if the red carpet show starts earlier so it's only until 12pm until something fun happens, but still, you pretty much are super tired the next day and since the big awards are usually on a sunday you can't expect a super productive monday afterwards, especially if there is lots to discuss and catch up on 'cause there is no possible way to catch everything that happened at first watch.

Hopes

Throughout the week the Creative Arts Emmys took place and a few people have already got their Emmy. Tonight the last Emmys are given out and I'm very excited to see people win awards again. Jimmy Kimmel is hosting and I'm hoping he will be as good as at the Oscars.

I am rooting for some love for "The Good Place" because I really liked the show. I believe "Mrs. America" is gonna bring home some Emmys, because there is just too much excellence in it to not win - even though I haven't seen it yet, I believe everything Cate Blanchett does, is brilliant. "Killing Eve" and "Hollywood" is being talked about a lot, so I think they might win some things. As for "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", which has always been sweeping awards the last few years, I think they will definitely continue with that. Since "Watchmen" has been talked about a lot as well and it has the most nominations of the night, I guess they won't go home empty-handed either. I really want "Dead To Me" to win something cause it was just too good and it resonated very much with me. Aside from that, one win I really want to happen is for Toni Collette to win for "Unbelievable", since Kaitlyn Dever wasn't nominated I hope the limited series is going to at least get acknowledged in that way.

Roundup

The 2020 Primetime Emmys were all in all a very entertaining, well-organized event. The jokes were mostly based on the current crisis, but were appropriate and from my point of view not even too much even though they dominated all comedic sequences. As we are used to by now it was very political and people did not shy away to make statements about the Black-Lives-Matter-Movement, RBG or the upcoming US elections. But other than we are used to, in my opinion, it was never coming in a bad way of sarcasm, irony or condescension. The speeches were heartfelt and felt very personal. The whole show was definitely different than I expected, in a good way though. The direction of the whole show was very well made - it must have been a nightmare to coordinate everything from the telecast and the connection to the nominees to giving out the actual awards without giving away who the winner is in advance. So it was all handled very well and comedic parts where either shot previously so it all had kind of a SNL feel or simple little, but effective jokes on the "stage".

The highlights of the nights definitely included "Schitt's Creek" sweeping one award after another, Zendaya winning and Jennifer Aniston and Jimmy Kimmel almost setting the stage on fire.
