CW 17: Killing Eve

"Don't forget, the only thing that makes you interesting is me."

What a series folks. First off, before everyone gets upset and confused about why I haven't seen Killing Eve up until now: I don't have HBO, I don't like to stream things illegally and so I had to wait. But the wait is over. It started streaming on Netflix last week and on a casual Wednesday I just started watching it.

I was very aware of the series since it was nominated for awards ever since it started so don't come for me! It wasn't anything new to me. But now that I have binge-watched the entire series in 5 days (there are four seasons - oops) I see "Killing Eve" in a whole new light. I'm not even sure what is so incredibly great about this series. Maybe it is the premise, the story, the crazy plot, twists and turns or quite simply Jodie Comer.

This woman. Watching her playing Villanelle is one thing but then watching Jodie Comer be Jodie Comer, makes her performance even more insane. The way that Jodie herself seems so different from Villanelle but plays her so effortlessly is mind-blowing. Her look, that subtle insanity in her eyes, her reactions, physicality and don't even get me started on the spot-on accents. Of course - as the award defender that I am -  I instantly looked up how many of the awards Jodie has won and finding out it was "only" one Emmy (of the major awards) is crazy. I guess it does come down to the fact that Sandra Oh was mostly also nominated in the same category which is usually a difficult situation since the votes split between both and so one "loses" votes to the other and another comes out triumphant. Anyways of course that doesn't take a way from the brilliance of Jodie Comer's performance. After finishing the series I went on to watch a lot of interviews with Jodie Comer and you will find a comment under every video saying "Villanelle plays Jodie Comer so well" (or similar) and truly when I see her, I see the character and as soon as she starts talking I'm am just left with my jaw on the floor.

Aside from the remarkable acting talent, the series is written so well. As I mentioned before there are so many unexpected twists and turns and a lot of the main and supporting characters are given the time and space to go through interesting character development. Again, Villanelle standing out with the character development she goes through. This is due to the writing but also the sublime way Jodie Comer has inhabited the role of Villanelle. Looking back, you are scared of her in the first season and she is pure evil, but by the end of season 3 you will see her in a completely different light and even feel empathy for her - it's wild.

I am now at the point where I finished watching the series and am seriously contemplating to re-watch it right away. There is surely so many subtleties I have missed and honestly Jodie Comer's performance is so incredibly enjoyable to watch. I will probably resist for a day or two until I realize no one can tell me what to do and it doesn't matter how weird it is to watch a series back to back.

Anyways, if you have made it this far into the blog entry and still don't know what I am talking about, go check out some trailers of "Killing Eve" or if you're not into trailers just give it a go and watch the first episode, I promise you won't regret it.

Find out if I can resist the urge to re-watch it and keep an eye out for the (very likely) upcoming review of "Killing Eve".
