CW 44: Pubquizzes
"The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing." ― Socrates
As mentioned in last week's weekly obsession I am obsessed with quiz shows and being a know-it-all (people who have met me at least once probably noticed). I've been attending Pubquizzes at least once a month for a good three years now, so pubquizzes are nothing new in my life.
This week however, I brought back my quarantine quiz which I started back in April to avoid going insane and have another chance to be a know-it-all. I would get everyone together in a zoom-call (which is probably the most used word this year, aside from the C-word) and let them fill out my quiz via a google form. It's always super fun to do research on the most random things you can think of and have your friends be mad at you for seeking out the weirdest questions, like last week, when I used one of our very own math problems from our final exams four years ago. The quiz usually starts with a picture round where the teams have to name nine different things seen on pictures out of a specific category, like famous red-heads or instruments. I get my inspiration from the various quizzes I attended and try to cover the most basic "general knowledge" categories like history, music, film, geography, chemistry, biology, physics and more...
But why is it my weekly obsession this week, if i've been doing this for a while now? Well first of all because I didn't have a lot of other things going on, but also because I went to three pubquizzes in a row (which is quite unique, even for me). One of these even was Disney-themed, one just general knowledge and the other one I did myself and got to annoy everyone with me being a smartass.
Pubquizzes are fun (if you give them time). The first pubquiz I went to was super frustrating. We didn't know much and it was all quite new to us. Since then though we have a "core team" and two pubs we mostly go to. By now we got used to each other and know when to trust someone's first instinct and when to better not listen to a specific person. With time you know how the questions are asked, what kind of answers they are looking for and how to prepare. Well it's hard to prepare for a general knowledge quiz because the questions can be about anything. However, knowing world geography is always a good start and the more random facts you learn, the broader your grid of knowledge gets so learning new facts gets easier every time.
... what we know is a drop of water, what we don't know is the ocean.
